The Scene:
Tonight is the engagement party for Deirdre and Gregory (her fiancé). The girls are all getting ready in the parlour.
Deidre is getting married and as usual she is the centre of attention. Her sister Judith is helping her by fixing her bolero for what seems to be the millionth time. While Judith is very happy for Deirdre she's struggling to overcome her feelings of jealousy as she has been harbouring secret feelings for Gregory for quite some time.
Emily is Deirdre's bridesmaid and lifelong friend, they were at school together. Emily was thrilled when Deirdre asked her to be bridesmaid especially when she realised that Frank was going to be best man! She daydreamed about a romantic encounter with Frank while puffing away on her cigarette.
Barbara and Holly are Deirdre and Judith's cousins, sisters themselves. They aren't too fussed about the wedding but do love a good party! Holly isn't very happy with her outfit of choice and is looking around with envy at the other girls and their beautiful dresses.
Camilla is as usual staring at herself in the mirror, she doesn't care about this upcoming wedding, the only reason she has come to the party is too try and win back Gregory and break up the impending marriage- she never did get over Gregory even after all these years. She smiles wickedly in the mirror.
Miranda although best friends with Camilla and being fully aware of her plan to break Deirdre and Gregory up cannot help enjoying the dreamy thoughts of such a beautiful party. She is entranced by Deirdre's dress tonight – imagine what she will look like on the wedding day!
Abigail and Mary are very much feeling like outsiders, they are Gregory's cousins they are naturally very shy. The girls aren't too sure why Gregory chose Deirdre to marry and decide to sit in the corner by themselves.
The girls are enjoying smoking and drinking champagne but soon draw tired of all the attention of the photographer Deirdre's parents hired for the night. Deirdre stands up and goes into the party with all of her ladies trailing behind swaying to the music as they go.
