Victory in Europe Day!

Last month we celebrated VE Day – Victory in Europe Day is the day celebrating the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War II of Germany's unconditional surrender of its armed forces on 8th May 1945, making the end of World War II in Europe. We asked our residents to share the stories of their past memories of the war:

Neville: Neville joined the army at 18 after spending 4 years at the Gordon Boys School. He signed up for twelve and a half years with the Royal Engineers as a plant operator, operating heavy plants such as bulldozers and building airstrips and other large constructions. He was too young to be in the 2nd world war but was engaged in active service in Cyprus against the Eoka terrorist group in the late 50s and Aden in 1967.

Jeff: Jeff was in the royal artillery and fought at Suez and in Cyprus, these are his medals. You can also see the Churchill bronze bust.

Robert Wason: Robert is one of our resident's husband, this is Robert in his RAF gear, of course being the wife of someone in the RAF was an important role.
